The Chooser gets to choose how we see things — even though we don't get to choose what happens to us.
Origin: a white hummingbird in Quincy Bay. A leucistic male could never have flashed a ruby throat at the sun, so no mate would have chosen him — which means the white bird had to be female. The females choose. Biology wrote the principle; she read it off the bird.
